There are many people these days who make fun of the “name it and claim it” preachers. I am sure that there may be a good reason. For me, I don’t care where a preacher comes from or what denomination they are. I listen, take notes and then search the scriptures. I want to know the biblical truth. Does the bible back it up? You know it is ok to be skeptical of what you hear, scripture says that we are to test the spirits. I’ve had people question the teachings I listen to, and some have told me I am going the wrong way. So I have sat back and said little on the topic because I hate controversy.
Life is the best teacher and once I experience something to be true I try not to forget the lesson. There are many scriptures that talk about the tongue and its power. Today I want to share the fact that you will have what you say. I want to start by sharing a part of my story. Like most people I grew up in a dysfunctional family. It was not a Christian home and I didn’t understand how careful one needed to be with the tongue. My mom did the best she could, but she was strict and controlling, and verbally abusive. As I got older our relationship grew more troubled. At one time in my life, I would always be telling others that the family was going to drive me crazy. At times I would even jokingly say that if they kept it up I would soon need my own padded room.
Fast forward several years I was battling depression and suicidal thoughts. I found myself in the mental hospital for 10 days because I feared that I was going to take my own life. Our words have power. No one can tell me otherwise. Sure there were many other things that added to the circumstances. But I have seen the scriptures that have proven to me that this is true.
Proverbs 18:21:
Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.
In Romans 4:17b says God, who gives life to the dead and calls those things which do not exist as though they did. This is a spiritual law, and most Christians know it well. We know that we have to speak the results we desire. If we are praying for a sick loved one what do you pray for? You pray for healing and claim that they already have it. You don’t sit there and rehearse every symptom you just ask God for the healing that he died to give them. We learn in the book of Hebrews that Jesus is the High Priest of our confession. He causes it to come to pass.
Mark 11:22-24 (AMP) says:
Jesus replied, “Have faith in God [constantly]. 23 I assure you and most solemnly say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea!’ and does not doubt in his heart [in God’s unlimited power], but believes that what he says is going to take place, it will be done for him [in accordance with God’s will]. 24 For this reason I am telling you, whatever things you ask for in prayer [in accordance with God’s will], believe [with confident trust] that you have received them, and they will be given to you.
We have a promise in this passage that we will have whatever we say. We see that we believe we receive them and it will happen. Many people today do this all the time only they do it in the negative. Maybe you have a habit of saying I get sick every year at Christmas. You say it for weeks before Christmas “I sure hope I don’t get sick this year at Christmas. You know I get sick at Christmas every year.” Then what happens Christmas day comes and you are sick. You just operated the same spiritual law the thing is you confessed the negative. It worked.
For me, my family did end up driving me crazy. I fought for years to regain control over my thoughts and reactions. To this day I know that the family is my one weak spot. The enemy will try that tactic again every time. Stress comes from my family and I have to guard my thoughts and prevent my words from speaking out of old habits. I think it is important that we begin to listen to the confessions that come out of our mouths. If we are confessing the problems we could be causing bad confessions to come to pass in our lives. 
We have a choice we can confess whatever Gods word says on a topic or we can confess what we see. But we need to realize that when we speak words of faith we give Jesus something to work with. Our unbelieving words can tie the hands of God. We have one job, to believe what He has said and to confess the promises we have been given.
Remember I don’t share this because I heard someone teach on it. I share this because I have seen it at work in my life. My confessions still need work a lot of the time, I’m human and I mess up. I believe that many people don’t understand how they are harming themselves by what they say. Learning by experience I desire to prevent others from facing some of the same problems.

It’s not biblical but it says the same thing that you talking about, we attract what we think and say. It talks about the Law of attraction.

I really liked The Secret too. While I don’t know if I actually believe in it fully – I do believe that positive thoughts and actions lead to a positive life. Same thing, I guess?
I’m not advocating the secret. I’ve not seen it. However I know that what I shared in this post is biblical and I do consider the Bible to be the final authority in my life.

Thank you for sharing this Deanna. ❤️ My family is a struggle area for me too. I often catch myself saying negative things and then realizing that it makes worse. It’s better for me lately to be quiet and take it to God as often as I can and remember His word. He uses what was meant to harm us for our good. And he works everything out for our good.
Yes and I am so thankful to know that God uses it all for our good. Even when it doesn’t always feel good in the moment.

Interesting thoughts, and worthwhile. However, I think we have to be careful (and I’m sure you are) not to assume that because we say and believe something, it’s automatically going to happen. People who believed their loved ones would be healed have buried them, and students who believed they aced the exam have failed. In all things, balance–and I think you believe this, too. BTW, as I grow in my faith, I find I’m watching my words much more carefully!
Yes, we must be balanced. But surely as you have seen we must be careful about our negative confessions because they can harm us. And yes, even our positive confessions may at times not line up with God’s will and that is the key.
After I read your piece this morning, I talked to my sister about it. I really needed to remember that my thoughts and my words definitely guide my actions.
I remember the first time that I realized how much my thoughts were affecting how I relate to others. I often fear how others see me and at times my insecurities have made me unable to see the loving community all around me. Or if I perceive I will be rejected then I have unknowingly reacted in ways that showed people that I was feeling rejected or being super defensive and touchy based on faulty thinking that was far from my reality.
